How we express ourselves
Technology
is an integral part of our daily lives today. In other words, it answers most of
our problems and addresses most of our needs. Across centuries technology has
evolved and has been used for various purposes, especially in computers. They
are being used literally for everything and by everyone for myriad kinds of
things like banking, chatting, social networking, keeping records and what not!
Students of Grade 5 will now try to keep pace with technology through the unit under the Transdisciplinary Theme, How we express ourselves with the
Key Concepts:
·
Form
·
Connection
·
Perspective
Lines of Inquiry:
·
Forms of technology used for human expression
·
How technology can be used to express
ourselves
·
Different points of view on the use of
technology
Through this unit, students will
inquire into different forms of technology used for human expression and also
find out how technology can be used to express ourselves thereby, learning to
appreciate the aesthetics in science. They will also get hands on experience of
some new software, application and web 2.0 tools which they will use to express
themselves. Their knowledge will also be enhanced with a few guest speakers
coming in and talking to them about the use of technology for expression.
The students will also get ample opportunities to develop Transdisciplinary
Skills and will be encouraged to acquire positive ‘Attitudes’ towards learning.
We request you to encourage your child to
inquire and research independently and share any action that is displayed by
your child as a result of this learning. You will be able to follow the
progress of the unit through the class blog, the link of which will be sent to
you shortly.
We look forward to your continued support
and cooperation on this purposeful journey.
Warm Regards,
Home Room Tutor
In the weeks gone by at school, in our subject UOI ( Unit Of Inquiry ), we saw a movie on different forms of human expressions and wrote the reflection. We first wrote five responses on the movie, then paired up with one friend to discuss our responses and come up with a new set of five responses. We repeated the same process with another group and arrived at another new set of common responses which showed the main idea. We also discussed the different forms of
expressions used by us and our parents/grandparents and made collages on the same. Through an engaging activity, we showed our understanding of our unit which led us to arrive at the the key concepts, lines of inquiry and the central idea.We also were introduced to 'Netiquettes', Cyber Safety and Security through guest lectures by Mr. Gurpreet Singh Monga and Mr. Satish Papnoi. We also had an online guest speaker, Mr. Jason Graham who talked about the use of technology for expression.

As we move ahead....
We had a guest
lecture in UOI. The guest lecture was about Internet Safety by Mr. Gurpreet Singh Monga who is an
internet lawyer. He told us some important things that we need to keep in mind while
working on internet –
- Never write all the words in capital letters because it shows you are shouting on the person you are writing to
- Don’t talk to the people whom you do not know
- Be friends with the people you know
- Never give your personal information to strangers and your friends
- Don’t try to hack or trace out someone else’s information and if you want to for some reasons you should ask the person
- If someone is blackmailing you do not blackmail him or her again, instead tell it to parents or your guardian
- Use appropriate language while chatting or emailing with your friend or family member
Never download any video music
without paying for it because you are not giving the credit to the creator
§ We, in pairs, chose a technology which is used
for human expression and started our research on the first line of inquiry. We presented
the information by choosing from the various options given in Think Tac Toe. We
also discussed the parameters for assessment of our presentations.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF KINDLE AND A BOOK
Technology has made a lot of changes in our lives from
letters to email, printed photos to digital photos and now paper books to E-books.
One of the most popular E-book reader is the Kindle. Let’s see how Kindle is
different from books.
Kindle can store up to 3500 E-books and can be carried
wherever you go. It supports multiple languages, so by selecting a language you
can read in the language of your choice. Kindle also has audio books for people
who are differently abled and who cannot read, so that they can listen to the
books. However, Kindle is very expensive and may not be affordable for some
people
Books
are more visible than Kindle E-books, and can be seen at a lot of places like
homes, shops, libraries, schools, etc. Books are easily shared and borrowed
with other people. However, books can be easily torn, damaged and get old over
time.

As far as you are reading, it doesn’t matter whether you choose Kindle E-books or paper books or a combination of both; you are
increasing your knowledge.

Unit of Inquiry Presentations
Our teacher gave us the choice of choosing software or web 2.0 tool on
which we had to create something so as to express ourselves. Today we shared
our work by the projector. Lot many students in class made a collage on
Photoshop on their vacation. One of the pictures of was with a fake
Frankenstein. It was really scary!
A boy also had edited photos by
Photoshop on his vacation. It was magical! A girl showed us a picture of a
birthday scene by using Tux Paint. She also put some fancy clothes on some
people attending the party. Some made their own e-book using blurb. It was
colourful
and the pictures very good! Sanjana and I made a Blogspot. A group of
boys made a puppet show on Puppet pals. All the presentations were so exciting
as we got to work on the laptops. I-pads. Simply amazing!! Few students also
made a comic strip using Toondoo. It was very spooky! A group of girls created
music using Garage band. The highlight of the presentation was a self-composed
song by Kelly, “It’s my Life” accompanied by her mother on the guitar using the
software, Audacity.

HATS FOR THINKING
On Friday, we the students of Grade 5 did a task on the Thinking Hats.
First we watched some few videos about technology and then started with the
task.
We had to reflect on the videos using Edward Do Bono’s The yellow hat
means good points, the Green hat means creativity, the blue hat means thinking, the red hat
means feelings, the white hat means facts and the black hat means bad points.
Supriyaa ma'am cut out some papers into hats. Each hat had a question on
it.
The yellow hat's question was "what are the advantages of the use of
technology",
The green hat's question was " Write some ways in which technology
can be used in an innovative way", the blue hat's question was "think
and list some of the ways in which technology will be used in the future",
the red hat's question was "what do you feel about the use of technology
in the present time?", the white hat's question was "state the things
that you saw in the videos" and the black hat's question was "what
are the disadvantages of the use of technology". We had to read the
questions carefully and write the responses. In the beginning it seemed very
easy but once we started, it became challenging as we really had to think hard.
It was also fun to read the responses of others. I really feel that it was good
using the hats because it gave direction to our thinking. Our thoughts were not
wandering here and there. We had specific answers for specific questions. The
class was really noisy while doing this but at the same time fun too!!

This week in the UOI lesson
We continued to make presentations on the topics of our
choice using different forms of technology such as Prezi, PowerPoint, blog, Zimmer Twins, Windows Movie Maker and
then shared the presentations with the class. Later on Shalini ma’am showed us
a few videos based on technology and how people use it. After watching about 3
or 4 videos we were given De Bono’s Thinking Hats to help us answer some
questions based on the video, for example, yellow was for the positives of the
videos, black was for the negatives of the videos, red was about your feelings
and so on.
UOI class was very interesting as usual. I hope it will always stay
like that.
